Charlene has recorded and performed in the Baltimore/Washington area as a solo artist and band leader since the 1980s. After studying classically, Charlene decided to pursue jazz and pop music. Her classical training was enhanced in 1990, when she received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study jazz. In the Washington area, Charlene has performed in a number of musicals, studied drama at Arena Stage and dance with Gale Nicholson in New York. While keeping her home base in Washington, Charlene has performed on the West Coast, New York City and recorded in Nashville and Atlanta.
